The St. Ekaterina University Hospital was formed in 1985 as a national centre for cardiovascular diseases led by professor Aleksandar Chirkov. Prof. Chirkov performed the first heart transplant in Bulgaria and the Balkans in 1986.
Today, the hospital’s activities rank it among the leading hospitals and cardiology and cardio-surgical centers in Bulgaria, the Balkans, and the European Union.
